That leaves Chris Read’s team with a lead of 17 and just six second innings wickets in hand after an afternoon in which all four of Lancashire’s main bowlers had enjoyed success.

The first batsman to go was Steven Mullaney, who was bowled for 21 by a ball which kept low from Jimmy Anderson. Nine overs later Greg Smith was caught at cover by Steven Croft off Simon Kerrigan for 41 when an attempted drive only succeeding in taking the leading edge.
