Replying to Lancashire’s 332 and having thereby conceded a first-innings lead of 90, Nottinghamshire were 32 for no wicket after 26 overs at lunch with Steven Mullaney having faced 82 balls for his 15 runs and Greg Smith having kept out 68 deliveries in compiling 17 not out.

The lunchtime figures of Lancashire’s bowlers fully reflected their accuracy. James Anderson had conceded nine runs from six overs and Kyle Jarvis’s analysis read 7-5-4-0. The Nottinghamshire openers were justifiably content to survive and hope to quicken the pace of scoring later in the day as the ball aged and Lancashire’s bowlers tired.
