Rain does Millers a favour in draw

Langley Mill’s first team made the short trip to Ambergate and came away with more points than they bargained for after the rain yet again intervened.

The Millers batted first and Jeff Wharton was promoted up the order with Paul Bailey for a right and left hand combination.

Wharton didn’t last too long, being bowled by Mason for 7, and Jay Holmes, the hero from the week before, suffered the same fate not long afterwards.

Sajendra Thimal came to the crease hoping to build on the little bit of form that he had showed the previous week and seemed to be doing this until a mix up with Bailey which ended up in him being run out for 18.

This left the Millers on 77 for 3 off 26 overs.

From here on though the Millers found scoring very hard work and started to lose wickets quite frequently for not many runs.

The mainstay of the innings was Paul Bailey who worked hard for his 57 but he fell in the 36th over with the score on 97.

The Millers’ lower order tried to get the score up to give the bowlers something to aim at and managed to reach 137 all out in the 45th over, which on reflection was probably about 40 too short for defending.

L Wallace took 3 for 23, P Mason and W Thomas took two wickets apiece and there was a solitary wicket for S Ahmed.

After tea the Millers took the field hoping to get a few early wickets to apply the pressure but this wasn’t to be.

Wes Thomas and Tom Holmes opened up against the Millers’ usual pairing of Wharton and Jack Scott and they looked quite comfortable, but then the heavens opened and no further play was able to take place.

Ambergate finished on 44 without loss off eightovers, The Millers the happier of the sides with the abandonment.

Next week sees Aston visit Station Road.

Earlier on in the season the Millers beat Aston and will be looking at doing this again to preserve their Division Two status for 2013. It is a 1.30pm start.

On Sunday the third team visit Handsworth also looking to pick up points to stay in Section Three of the Mansfield league.

This is also a 1.30pm start.
