Football can be a cruel mistress as Eastwood Town once again discovered in this match at Coronation Park on Saturday.

The hosts dominated large periods of this game only to lose as visitors Newcastle grabbed the only goal of the game and condemned their hosts to a tenth straight defeat.

The Badgers started brightly and Daniel O’Donnell hit the crossbar after only 30 seconds, the ball rebounding at speed to striker Vijay Selvam who was unable to guide it into the empty net.

Henry Sibenge had a shot well held, as did O’Donnell as he tried to replicate his earlier free kick.

Eastwood were well on top and it took Newcastle 23 minutes to conjure up their first real attack which was ably dealt with by the defence

Selvam turned a left wing cross goalwards but it didn’t have enough power to beat David Parton in the Newcastle goal and O’Donnell’s shot was charged down as the Badgers continued to dictate play.

As the half neared its conclusion the visitors started to get a foothold on the game. Jordan Cole saw a stinging shot well saved by Daniel Dobbie, before latching onto Tim Sanders’ back heel and firing over the bar.

Eastwood threatened first in the second-half as Sibenge wormed his way into the box but fired wide.

However, the only goal of the game came just two minutes in as a long ball into the Eastwood area was completely missed by the defence. Ricardo Swaby returned the ball and Luke Askey rose highest to head home.

Swaby fired over when well-placed but the Badgers soon asserted their authority with Selvam firing wide and O’Donnell chipping wide after Parton could only palm a ball just outside the box.

Sanders should have made victory for the visitors certain in the 67th minute as Jack Coulson gave away a needless penalty. However, Dobbie was equal to it and pushed it away to safety.

Although this should have acted as a catalyst for the Badgers to go on and rescue something from a game they should have won at a canter, it didn’t and the visitors were looking comfortable until a few minutes from the end.

In one last ditch effort Coulson nearly atoned for the penalty, throwing himself at a right wing cross but placed his header inches wide of the upright and another miserable year for the Badgers ended with a defeat that leaves them ten points adrift of safety at the bottom of the league.
