British tennis star Heather Watson was left to rue a missed opportunity, as she crashed out of the US Open in the first round.

Watson said she let tension get to her, as she lost in straight sets to world number 84 Lauren Davis in New York.

In rugby, Ireland have left 2014 Player of the Year Andrew Trimble out of their 2015 World Cup squad.

The 30-year-old Ulster winger missed this year’s Six Nations because of a toe injury but returned to action in last month’s victory over Wales in Cardiff.

While he misses out, seven of his Ulster team-mates are named in the squad, including centre Darren Cave.

Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendleton made her competitive debut as a jockey in the Betfair Novice Flat Amateur Riders’ Handicap at Ripon - finishing second.

She was beaten by 33-1 chance Jorduara.
