Music on film at Quad

A selection of music-focused films and films with live musical accompaniment will screen at Derby arts centre Quad in October and November.

Live satellite footage from the red carpet premiere of The Rolling Stones new film can be seen at Quad later this month.

The worldwide premiere from the BFI London Film Festival will be beamed live via satellite prior to a screening of the film, Crossfire Hurricane.

Rock icons The Rolling Stones are chronicled in a kaleidoscopic film which documents key periods in their five decades in the music business. Crossfire Hurricane combines extensive archive footage, much of it unseen, with interviews with Mick, Keith, Charlie, Ronnie and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor. It is combined with archive interviews, extensive live performance material and news archive which give the film a truly kinetic aura.

Live via satellite, The Rolling Stones: Crossfire Hurricane screens at Quad on Thursday, October 18, at 6pm. Tickets are £12.50 and £11.50.

Classic German silent horror film Nosferatu will be screened with live musical accompaniment by Minima at Quad in November. Nosferatu, from 1922, is director F W Murnau’s striking adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel Dracula with Max Schreck’s portrayal of Count Orlok being one of the great iconic cinema images.

Minima’s music features an ensemble of drums, bass, guitar and cello, combining hypnotic post-rock beats with quasi-classical arrangements, striking up a thrilling relationship with the film. Nosferatu (PG) screens on Saturday, November 10, at 6.30pm. Tickets are £10 and £9.

John Carpenter’s Dark Star will be screened with live musical accompaniment by Animat in November.

Widely regarded as a cult classic, Dark Star is John Carpenter’s first feature film from 1974. Co-written by and starring Alien screenwriter Dan O’Bannon, this low budget space comedy has been a seminal influence on 21st century Sci-Fi and has found its place as the missing link between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Red Dwarf.

Animat have developed a new soundtrack to the film which they perform live using a mixture of their own original brand of dub down-tempo, an eclectic selection of tracks from their DJ archive and remixed versions of themes from the original score. Dark Star (PG) screens on Friday, November 23, at 8.30pm. Tickets are £10 and £9.
