The Dalesmen Male Voice Choir

A competition to find the county’s most talented young musicians is, for the third year in succession, being held by the Dalesmen Male Voice Choir.

The Dalesmen (pictured), who continuously support local charities and good causes, decided in 2012 to create a scheme offering financial assistance to young music students.

The Dalesmen Student Award Scheme provides the winner with £500 and the glass crystal Reg Dean trophy, named in honour of the choir’s late president, who died in January 2013 aged 110.

Past winners have been pianist Eleanor Kornas from Darley Dale, in 2012. Eleanor, who is now a music scholar at Trinity College Cambridge, played at the Dalesmen’s 25th Anniversary concert in November 2012, along with the Syd Lawrence orchestra.

The winner in 2013 was talented violinist Naomi Wilmshurst from Duffield, whose performance to gain first place was described by senior adjudicator Neil Page as, “breath-taking and of commendable technical mastery and vitality”. Naomi will be taking part in the Dalesmen’s Concert entitled All in the April Evening at Derby Cathedral on Saturday, April 26. The concert will also include the Penrhyn Male Voice Choir from Snowdonia, and a group of former head and deputy head lady choristers from St Davids Cathedral in Pembrokeshire, performing as Vox Angel

The 2014 Student Award competition will take place at Ecclesbourne School, Duffield on Saturday, May 3, and is open to all students who have achieved Grade Seven or above in their music exams and are at school or college in Derbyshire.

This year’s head adjudicator will be Christine Palmer, a professional pianist and an international examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and she will be joined by two other qualified adjudicators.

Details of how to enter can be obtained at www.dalesmen.org or by phone to Paul Sheward on 01773 748986. Entries must be received by March 29.
