Festive fun with films at Quad

DERBY-BASED arts centre Quad will be embracing the festive season with a selection of events for all ages with seasonal film screenings and festive favourites from the archives in the BFI Mediatheque.

Among the latest releases, Quad Cinema will screen It’s A Wonderful Life (U) on December 23 and 24.

For younger cinema-goers, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the entire cast of the Muppet universe retell Charles Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol in The Muppet Christmas Carol. Michael Caine is Ebenezer Scrooge in a world of muppety magic and the Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and yet to come. The Muppet Christmas Carol (U) screens as a Cine Kids screening on December 23 and 24.

Quad’s monthly ‘80s film club, Crossing The Streams, has a screening of Scrooged (PG) from 1988 with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future who visit Bill Murray to attempt to transform him from a power and money obsessed yuppie. Scrooged screens on Friday, December 23, at 8.40pm. Host Dominic Burns will introduce the screening.

The BFI Mediatheque in Quad will be offering some free festive entertainment with especially themed collections of films, Santa’s Grotto and A Ghost Story for Christmas.

Santa’s Grotto Collection, includes striking Santa’s (Father Christmas Union, 1972), spending Christmas Day in the Workhouse (1914), and season’s greetings from the celebrities of yesteryear in British yuletide TV of the past with the best examples of the Christmas Variety Show.

A new collection, entitled A Ghost Story for Christmas, features the BBC’s annual yuletide TV dramas of the same name from the 1970s. Picking up where Dickens’s A Christmas Carol left off, these Victorian

or Edwardian set atmospheric dramas played brilliantly with the power of suggestion.

The Ghost Story for Christmas Collection includes a new version of Whistle And I’ll Come To You starring John Hurt, shown on Christmas Eve 2010, suggesting our fascination with festive chills remains as compelling as ever.

The BFI Mediatheque at Quad is open daily and free to use, please contact Quad box office for details on 01332 290606.
