Classical treats in new season

Derby LIVE has announced the details for its 2012-2013 Classical Season.

It begins with the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, followed by Derby-based Sinfonia Viva, old friends The Hallè and the ever-popular European Union Chamber Orchestra.

The St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra visits on October 4 and has carefully chosen a programme that highlights the very best in Russian and English orchestral music, including Vaughan Williams’s Fanstasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, chosen by Classic FM listeners as one of the top five most popular works.

The brilliant young Russian virtuoso, Alexander Sitkovetsky, will play one Prokofiev’s most passionate works, the Violin Concerto No1. The concert will end with Tchaikovsky’s elemental Symphony No 5, with its exhilarating finale.

The season continues with Sinfonia Viva, who return on November 12 with a varied programme that seamlessly mixes the contemporary with the classic, from Beethoven to Bernard Herrmann’s chilling Psycho Suite, from Hitchcock’s 1960 film.

Later in the season, the visitors will be the European Union Chamber Orchestra (January 23), Sinfonia Viva (March 19) and The Halle (May 9).

Derby LIVE also offers additional entertainment to accompany the season. Talking Music takes place before each of the concerts within the series and is free to all ticket holders. It enhances the concert experience by allowing the audience the opportunity to interact with the conductors, soloists or members of the orchestra before each concert.

Following each concert an Encore performance takes place within the Great Hall foyer. This event features either musicians from the evening’s orchestra, or talented local musicians who play in an informal setting with the bars remaining open throughout.

Additional events that lie outside the subscription series include Glorious Handel by Candlelight on Sunday, November 18, and Last of the Autumn Proms on Sunday, November 25.

Tickets for the season are now on general sale and are priced from £16.25-£29.25, with concessions and group discounts available.

Derby LIVE also offers under 16s and NUS card holders tickets for just £5 and family tickets with two tickets for under 16s free when two full priced adult tickets are available.

Season tickets are available, with audience members being able to save up to 30 per cent, along with other benefits, with the Quintet subscription and 15 per cent if you sign up for three concerts with the Trio subscription.

Bookings can be made at www.derbylive.co.uk or through the Derby LIVE box office on 01332 255800.
