local band Dreaded Monkey’s mission to win a national unsigned band contest has taken a major step forward after making it through to the regional final.

The alt-rock five-piece band features members from Heanor, Ilkeston, Eastwood and Arnold and the quintet is currently competing in the UK-wide Surface Festival.

Dreaded Monkey have been gigging in Surface Festival heats for the past seven months and their persistence and skill has been rewarded with a place in the regional final, to be held on August 28 at The O2 Academy, Birmingham.

Their aim is to claim a place in the national final at London’s O2 Arena and they are now just one step away from making this dream a reality.

It’s been a a tough seven months for the band with a busy touring schedule, media appearances, the recruitment of new band members and of course plenty of disasters along the way, but the hard work has now paid off.

Tom from the band explained: “We are all totally honoured to have got this far in the competition. We really owe it all to our awesome fans who we could have not got this far without. They are all like new additions to our forever growing family and we can’t wait to show them how much their support mans to us at the show at the 02 Academy.”

Bandmate Paul added: “The band can honestly not thank all our fans and supporters enough for the achievements they have helped us get under our belt. A huge thank you to you all.”

As the band is still competing in the surface festival, they still need all the help they can get. You can vote for Dreaded Monkey in the competition by texting “midlands 3118” to the number 64343. Terms and conditions apply and can be found on the festival website.

Tickets are also now on sale for all the band’s upcoming gigs and can be purchased at http://www.facebook.com/DreadedMonkeyMusic or by contacting dreadedmonkey9@ntlworld.com.

The band are due to finish their tour with a gig at The Maze in Nottingham on August 7 and then start work on their follow up to the record The Weight Is Uncertain.
