Big names for summer season

AN exciting new summer season featuring internationally acclaimed drama, hit West End musicals and some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry has been announced for the Theatre Royal, Nottingham, and the Royal Concert Hall.

One of the major highlights of the Theatre Royal’s season will be Chekhov’s Three Sisters, arguably one of the greatest plays of the 20th century. The Nottingham visit in June will be an exclusive opportunity for UK audiences to see the return of this stunning Russian production from Cheek By Jowl, which first took the national critics by storm in 2007.

The summer season offers even more in the way of stirring and passionate drama with the National Theatre’s award-winning The Pitmen Painters at the Theatre Royal in June. This award-winning play tells the moving story of a group of Ashington miners and the astonishing artwork they produced in the 1930s.

Also this season, those ever-resourceful Calendar Girls return in July to tell their inspiring and hilarious story for one last time.

No summer theatre season in Nottingham would be complete, though, without Colin McIntyre’s Classic Thriller Season, bringing murder and mayhem, plus a few laughs along the way, to the Theatre Royal in August. To whet our appetites, Colin McIntyre also directs Mike Harding’s hilarious Fur Coat and No Knickers Coat And No Knickers at the Theatre Royal in June.

One of the most hotly-anticipated musical productions in recent West End history, The Sound Of Music, takes to the road in July with a three-week run at the Theatre Royal. This lavish production, starring Verity Rushworth, comes direct from the London Palladium. Andrew Lloyd Webber fans will also be delighted to see his classic musical Tell Me On A Sunday, starring Claire Sweeney, in June.

Not to be outshone this summer, some stellar names will also be lighting up the Royal Concert Hall stage, including Paul Simon (June 23), Don McLean (June 24), David Gray (June 5), k d lang (June 4) and Michael Ball (June 7 and 8).
