The Good Companions Stage Society return to the stage when their production of Oklahoma! takes place from October 21-25 at Derby Theatre.
Following last year’s award winning, hit musical The Witches of Eastwick, this autumn the Good Companions present one of the most important pieces of musical theatre of the 20th century.
Oklahoma! is the iconic Rodgers and Hammerstein show which inspired a new generation of Broadway musicals, opening in 1943 and running for an impressive five years, with the pair winning a special Pulitzer Prize for the show in 1944.
The plot is simple: set in the Oklahoma territory in the early 1900s, depicting the pioneering settlers in the American south west, the musical revolves around who will take Laurey to the dance - Curly or the sinister Jud Fry.
The production team will be the winning partnership of Phil Simcox as director, Morris Fisher as musical director and Pauline Reader as choreographer.
“Last year, we chose a relatively new and unknown show,” said director Phil Simcox.
“So this year, we have chosen to give our Derby audiences one of the classics.”
Musical director Morris Fisher added: “It’s a show with a truly memorable score with songs such as Oh What A Beautiful Morning, The Surrey With A Fringe On Top, People Will Say We’re In Love and of course the title song.”
The company has been in full rehearsal mode throughout the summer and now into the autumn, being put through their paces by choreographer Pauline Reader, who said: “The dances in Oklahoma! have significant importance as it was American ballet choreographer Agnes DeMille who first created dances that joined the songs and libretto, giving the show a power no other musical comedy had shown before.”
So get out your checked shirt, put on your jeans and head down to Derby Theatre to join the Good Companions for a high energy performance, and find out who will take Laurey to the dance.
Performances take place nightly from 7.30pm and there is also a Saturday matinee from 2.30pm.
