Cotmanhay homes had no water

This photograph shows a group of houses in Cotmanhay which were know as Botany Bay.

After David Instone’s grandparents Fred and Eliza Bagshaw married they moved to these homes, between the canal and the railway line, in 1900.

“This is where five of their 10 children were born,” said David.

“It must have been so rough for them in those days, the house had no electricity, no gas and no water mains. From what my mum said, Grandma went every day to the Bridge Inn on Bridge Street with two buckets to fill at the pub’s standpipe in the outside toilets.”

They later moved to Stratford Street, where David’s mother was born.
