Grand National winner visits town

In August 1979 triple Grand National winner Red Rum led a parade through Eastwood for the Arcadian’s Gala Spectacular.

The parade, which included many bands and the Grenadier Guards, was stopped at one point when Red Rum cast a shoe and and his groom threw it into the crowd.

Someone in the town more than likely has a momento of the famous race horse’s visit.

Red Rum is seen here passing the library in Nottingham Road, led by his groom and an enthusiastic crowd of children – all perhaps wondering what it would be like to ride him around the Grand National racecourse.
