This is a picture of workers down Moorgreen Pit in the 1940s.
It was submitted by Gordon Keeling who lives in Newthorpe.
Mr Keeling pointed out that the photo was obviously taken before pit helmets and cap lights came about, as the workers are just wearing plain flat caps.
The pit ponies were finally finished working around 1950s.
Mr Keeling said: “A miner’s life was very hard in the 30s and 40s. My father had a very hard life and from just one accident he never worked again.”
Mr Keeling’s father died from TB, contracted from coal dust on the lungs.
