After an appeal in last week’s Advertiser for information about Eastwood’s J West shop, a reader got in touch to shed some light on its history.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said the grocer used to be opposite the junction of Alexander Street on Nottingham Road.

“It was part of Burton’s grocers, which was further down the road,” she said. “My sister used to work at Burton’s and a girl I used to get the bus to work with each morning worked at West’s.”

The woman was in her teens back in the 1950s when she remembered the shop, but estimated this picture was taken in the 1920s.
