The Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB), which helps hundreds of residents in Eastwood every year, is gearing up to celebrate its landmark 40th anniversary.

Citizens’ Advice Broxtowe has provided free, confidential and impartial advice to more than 180,000 clients since its launch in 1974 and has helped to deal with 1.2 million problems.

The organisation has a base in Eastwood at Wellington Place.

Now it is ready to mark its 40th anniversary later this year.

Chief executive Sue Maslowska said she was proud of the service.

She added: “To have been serving the people of Broxtowe continuously for 40 years is certainly something worth celebrating.”

The organisation has secured hundreds of thousands of pounds in recent years to ensure it continues its vital work.

A local couple, who asked for support in dealing with £39,000 worth of debt, are a prime example of the sort of case the organisation helps with.

The advisor who dealt with this discussed their options and decided that bankruptcy was the best option. Help was given in applying for bankruptcy and benefits. The couple are now debt free and the depression and stress from mounting debts has eased.

To celebrate the anniversary a special event will be held on September 18 where there will be displays of archive photos and stories from across the decades and it is hoped those who worked as volunteers in the early days will get involved.

The advice service depends on its volunteers in a range of roles from giving advice to fundraising, admin, campaigning and trusteeship and Citizens’ Advice Broxtowe is appealing for more volunteers to join their team.

A volunteer advisor said: “I get huge satisfaction when clients come in upset and leave with a smile on their faces – no other organisation can help in the same way we can.”

The Eastwood base is also hosting a volunteers’ fair on July 16 (4.15pm to 7.15pm).

It would also like to create a commemorative DVD of the 40th anniversary celebrations.
