Following the shocking announcement that Eastwood Community Sports Centre will close in February next year, Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero has joined councillors and the school in discussions to secure its future.
Last week, the Advertiser reported that due to the termination of a Community Use Agreement between Broxtowe Borough Council and Hall Park Academy when it converted to an academy, the centre would have to close.
This has left sports clubs without a venue for practise and competitions and little time to find a new one.
Ms De Piero explained that she had been in meetings with the school and leader of Broxtowe Borough Council this week to see if the sports centre could be kept open.
She added: “I’ve been contacted by many Eastwood residents who are worried about the rumoured closure of the sports centre based at Hall Park Academy - formerly Eastwood Comprehensive.
“Last week I met with Cllr Milan Radulovic and staff from the school.
“Both parties want to keep the sports centre open and are working to secure that.”
Advertiser readers have been taking to social media to tell us what they think about the closure.
Natalie Cantillon said : “It is absolutely terrible for the local community and all the clubs who use the centre.”
And Margaret Oates asked: “Why does it seem that when we get anything worthwhile in the Eastwood community it is taken away from us?”
