Council clampdown on faulty tyres

Trading Standards officers in Nottinghamshire have reported an increase in the number of serious accidents involving cars with faulty tyres.

Undercover officers visited a number of tyre dealers as part of a countywide operation today last week during national Road Safety Week.

They took single wheel rims into ten separate tyre dealers and asked them to fit an inexpensive used tyre. An examination found one had undergone a botched, temporary repair and two were not the right size.

Defective tyres have contributed to a total of 142 accidents, resulting in 231 casualties, with 70 killed or seriously injured, in Nottinghamshire since 2006.
