Council leader praises support for victims of Skegby fire.

The leader of Ashfield District Council has praised the community efforts to support victims of a Skegby fire.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny has given support to all efforts involved with the fire at The Beeches, Beech Street, which badly damaged three bungalows on the street, on Tuesday (July 17).

The victims have received medical, psychological and housing support following the fire, and Mr Zadrozny has backed all sectors who supported residents following the blaze.

He said: “Both Councillor Helen-Ann Smith and I were on the scene straight away and opened the Community Centre at The Beeches for all residents who had been outside for ages.

“All residents, many of them elderly were evacuated safely and emergency accommodation provided to those who required it. I would like to thank Ashfield District Council officers who supported Nottinghamshire Police and our fire service. The “The council’s Community Protection Team are working with residents and will continue to offer support over the coming days and months.

“I would also like to thank Justin Gilbody, the local chemist who opened out of hours to ensure that residents received all their prescriptions. It really was a community effort and thankfully there was no fatalities.”

Firefighters from Ashfield fire station have been engaging in community reassurance since the fire, working around Skegby to reassure residents.

Work has been ongoing by the fire service to support members of the Skegby community who were affected by the fire, which was dealt with at 6.56 pm on Tuesday.

Crews from Edwinstowe and Ashfield joined two crews from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service in tackling a fire at the three bungalows.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and two main jets to extinguish the fire.

Two of the buildings were severely damaged by the fire.

Investigations are ongoing to find out the cause of the fire, and more information will be released in the coming days.
