Labour councillors will make a case for two annual Market Days to celebrate the borough’s historic markets and boost town centre trade.

Cllr John Frudd and Cllr Frank Phillips will put forward their motion at tonight’s full council meeting.

They will ask the Tory leadership to agree to an annual Erewash Market Day where traders can pitch for free in both Ilkeston and Long Eaton.

Erewash borough Council’s shadow cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr John Frudd said: “A key component to high street regeneration in Erewash are our two historic markets.

“Markets play a vital role in the local economy, they sell a huge range of products, have a bustling atmosphere and the traders are experts in what they sell. What more could you want?

“Ilkeston Market plays a particularly important role for the town, where terminal decline will become unstoppable if serious and meaning measures are not taken.”
