If you’ve been out and about in Eastwood recently (dodging the rain of course) you may have noticed some very young uniformed faces on the beat. These are our Voluntary Police Cadets.
We recruited more than 70 cadets across the force last September, after a gap of nearly 30 years.

The cadets, who are all aged 16 on joining, take part in a two year training and development programme.

They meet once a week on a weekday evening, where they learn about a range of topics including police history, first aid, conflict management skills and campaigns, including those to reduce road traffic accidents, anti-social behaviour, and alcohol related crime.

We have six cadets that regularly cover the Eastwood area and they have been out and about with the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

We will soon be recruiting again for more young volunteers aged 16 years old to start next September. You will find more information and how to apply on our website.

In other news you’ll soon be able to keep up to date with Eastwood Policing from your smartphones and laptops if you follow us on Twitter.

PCSO Martyn Barsby will be giving updates and alerts in 140 characters so do follow him @Eastwoodcops if you can.

He’ll be tweeting some advice about protecting yourself from vehicle crime.

At the moment we’re seeing a number of reports of this kind of crime.

For example just last Monday (February 24) a van was broken into in Moorgreen between 6.30pm and 9pm. Tools were taken.

We are seeing cars and vans broken into at all times of day and night.

Please make sure you lock your vehicle securely - you’d be surprised how often an opportunistic thief will strike when a door or boot has been left open.

Also remove everything from the car as you leave, you might know it’s your empty lunchbox on the back seat but does it look like that to a potential offender?

Stolen change, empty CD cases and food and drink have been taken from cars and this just leaves motorists with a hefty insurance bill.

Work with us and help prevent yourself from becoming a victim.
