Learning to bridge career gaps

FEMALE pupils from Selston Arts and Community College swapped their textbooks for hard hats as they learned more about the world of civil engineering at West Notts College.

They were among students from four schools in Nottinghamshire who constructed a bridge made out of aluminium, plywood and stainless steel cables.

The challenges were run by the college and the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) through the ‘Bridge to Schools’ scheme – and gave the youngsters an insight into the work of civil engineers, traditionally a male-dominated industry.

Pictured with the pupils are ICE’s Bridge to School’s co-ordinator Bridget Burke, far left, and Maxine Buttery, from the college.
