A FORMER doctors’ surgery in Eastwood will remain empty after councillors gave the thumbs down to plan to convert it into six flats.

Members of Broxtowe Borough Council’s planning committee said the building at 89 Plumptre Way was too small to accommodate six flats.

Cllr David Grindell said: “I would rather have rabbits in there than human beings.”

Head of planning Steve Dance said the flats would have space for four cars to park at the front and ‘some private space’ at the rear.

Cllr Brian Wombwell said he would prefer to see it converted into four flats and expressed concerns about children living there.

But Cllr Andy Cooper said: “There is a shortage of housing in Eastwood. I don’t think it would be suitable for a family but there is a park across the road.”

Councillors voted two in favour and nine against at the meeting last Wednesday.
