GPs: Workers should be allowed to self-certify illness for 14 days

Doctors say that workers should be trusted to self-certify sickness for up to 14 days in a bid to reduce the number of GP appointments.

The proposal was put forward at the British Medical Association’s annual conference recently and is to be put to debate.

Currently workers require a doctor’s note if they are off for more than week, but GPs have asked this be extended amid increasing demand for appointments.

It is estimated that GP’s in the UK carry out 370 million appointments a year.
