Gritting crews from Nottinghamshire County Council have travelled the equivalent of Nottingham to the North Pole and back in less than 24 hours, keeping the county’s roads salted.
The Council’s gritting teams broke their own record yesterday, March 22, when they completed their 109th salting run this season – beating the previous record of 108 from the winter of 2010.
Each time the teams go out they salt approximately 1,120 miles of road across Nottinghamshire. In the 24 hours from 8pm Thursday they will have completed five runs, making a total of 5,600 miles.
The distance from Nottingham to the North Pole and back is 5,100 miles.
The council’s 23 gritting teams completed two runs overnight – the first starting at 8pm and a second one from 2am onwards – salting all A and B roads and major bus routes.
