A selection of tape recordings and photograps belonging to an old school friend of the Eastwood-born author DH Lawrence are to be sold at auction next week.
The items, which belonged to aJCP Taylor, include a series of tape recordings made by Taylor recalling his and Lawrence’s time at the Greasley Beauvale School in the 1890s.
On top of this, the collection includes a series of articles on Lawrence’s early years written by Taylor, and his own copy of the Lawrence biography written by his girlfriend, Jessie Chambers.
Some of the photographs in the lot are of views across Haggs Farm where Jessie Chambers and Lawrence spent spent a lot of time together.
Lawrence’s girlfriend was the first person to realise that he was a writer of genius.
The lot will go under the hammer on Thursday June 12 at Mellors & Kirk.
Nigel Kirk, from the Nottingham auctioneers, said that the items are difficult to value.
He added: “It will be interesting to see where this lot ends up.
“The photographs also include many taken of evocative views of Eastwoodand the area as it appeared over 50 years ago.
“They were taken by Stanley Hutchinson, a professional photographer who was also an Eastwood man.
“He was one of a dedicated group of loyal supporters determined to gain proper recognition for Lawrence in the years following the famous obscenity trial over the Lady Chatterley novel in 1960.”
