LETTER: School improvements

Ashfield District Council offices.

Over the half tem holidays the new highways scheme to improve safety for the children of Westwood School took place.

A railing has been mounted and the footpath widened. I am sure that this new layout will greatly assist parents when crossing the road and will help to prevent any accidents from children running into the road.

It took a long time for County Hall to really appreciate the danger just outside of a school gate. The footpath was so very narrow making it impossible to have a railing according to the highway department because parents could not walk by with buggies. I saw no other school without protective railings in the county so it is only right that at last the Westwood children have a decent level of protection too.

I spoke out about this at a County Council meeting in one of my divisional speeches. From that, I arranged several meetings with Highways, the Head Teacher and representatives from parents then at last we all came up with a scheme that could work. So I am very happy that at last the road safety issues Westwood School have been addressed by County Highways.
