Man jailed for catapulting drugs into a Nottinghamshire prison

A man who was caught throwing drugs into the grounds of HMP Ranby has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Lee Duroe was seen on CCTV in the woods near to the prison on Wednesday, September, 5, 2017, using a catapult to fire items over the perimeter fence.

The 29-year-old, of Aldred street in Rotherham, tried to flee from officers but was detained nearby along with a catapult, bag, phone and ball bearings. Eight packages were recovered within the prison grounds which contained large quantities of Diamorphine (class A drug), cannabis and tobacco.

On Monday, November 5, 2018, at Nottingham Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to conveying articles into a prison and was subsequently sentenced.

Police Constable David Hauton said: "We're pleased that Duroe has received a substantial prison sentence for these crimes. We hope it sends the message out to anyone thinking of carrying out similar act that we have methods in place and proactively do everything we can to prevent it, and that these cases will be taken seriously by the courts."
