The European elections were held this week and with this photo we capture one of the heavyweights of British poltics in recent years, Geoff Hoon, when he was on the campaign trail back in early 1989.

Mr Hoon was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for Derbyshire and Ashfield in 1984 and served in Brussels and Strasbourg for ten years. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1992.

Mr Hoon went on to play a major part in New Labour’s rise to power when they took Downing Street in 1997.

He later became Defence Secretary, Transport Secretary, Leader of the House of Commons and Labour Party Chief Whip.
