A member of the Eastwood and District Motor Club is returning to Barbados after tracking down the Mini in which he completed his first race on the island.
IT consultant Andy Hawkins recently tracked down British Leyland Mini which he competed in back in 2003 so that he could make a glorious return for the Sol Rally in Barbados next summer.
This will be Andy’s third visit to the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport event were he came fifth in the Historic class and 32nd overall in 2003.
However, Andy from Newark said it had not been as hard as he expected to track down his former Mini.
The 48-year-old added: “I found a copy of the receipt that I had given the new owner when I sold her in 2006, so I contacted him.
“We struck a deal and she is now back in my hands after being away for almost eight years and is pretty much exactly as I sold her.
“She is even still sporting the event numbers from the last rally I did in the UK.”
Andy says that the Mini needs quite a lot of work to bring it up to current regulations for the 2015 Barbados race.
The 25th annual event will take place on the weekend of May 30/31.
