Eastwood MP Gloria De Piero has hit out at the Government after shocking figures revealed that more working people in the area are relying on housing benefit.

The new statistics have shown the number of working people in Broxtowe alone that are relying on housing benefit to pay their rent has increased by 47 percent since the last election.

The MP for Eastwood said that it isn’t right that ordinary people who do the right thing and go to work should be relying on housing benefit.

She added: “The Tories and Lib Dems might talk tough about reducing the benefits bill but the truth is they have failed to get to grips with the problem.

“People will be shocked to find out that so many hard working people in Eastwood are now reliant on housing benefit just to pay the bills and keep a roof over their heads.”

The new statistics show that there are now 6,003 people claiming housing benefit in Broxtowe, including those out of work, which is an increase of 191 people since May 2010.

Gloria said that David Cameron and Nick Clegg are either unwilling or unable to do anything about the cost of living crisis.

She added: “They seem content to let the British taxpayer pick up the bill.

“People in Eastwood will want to see real action to tackle the cost of living crisis and the increasingly large housing benefit bill.”

Statistics have also shown that the number of people who are in work and claiming housing benefit has increased by 60 percent nationally, costing taxpayers an extra £6 billion.
