MP backs parliament metal campaign

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry is backing a campaign to stop to metal theft.

Labour’s Graham Jones is calling for new measures to regulate scrap metal yards and Ms Soubry met with police to discuss the problem in Broxtowe last weekend.

“The desecration of war memorials and churches by stealing plaques and lead is despicable,” she said.

St Mary’s Church in Greasley has a stainless steel roof after being targeted by scrap metal thieves last year.

All the brass and copper plaques on tombstones and memorials have been removed by the church and stored elsewhere because of the threat from thieves.

The new measures would mean yards would have to be licensed, have CCTV and proper records.

“Closing down dodgy scrap metal yards is critical,” Ms Soubry added.
