MP Anna Soubry, who represents Kimberley, has climbed another rung of the political ladder and now sits just one level below the Cabinet after Prime Minister David Cameron’s reshuffle this week.

Miss Soubry, who was elected to the Broxtowe seat in 2010, has been elevated to Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence.

It comes less than a year after she became the first female minister at the MoD.

The decision has been made by Mr Cameron as he looks to get his team in place ahead of next year’s General Election

Conservative Miss Soubry, a former lawyer and TV presenter, has previously been Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health before being switched the the MoD last October where she was responsible for the Armed Forces Covenant, armed forces recruitment change agenda, legal matters, civilian personnel, cadets, veterans and service families.

The news for Miss Soubry came hot on the heels off Eastwood’s MP, Gloria De Piero, being hand-picked for an exciting new role in Labour’s General Election team.

Ms De Piero has been appointed a ‘campaign deputy’ as Labour moves into the next phase of its preparations for the national pole.

The new role, in addition to her being Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, will build on her campaigning during this year’s local and European elections to include liaising with prospective Parliamentary candidates, maximising performance from field operations, and broadcasting information.

Ms De Piero said: “It’s an exciting time ahead and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in to help deliver the Labour Government people in Eastwood and Ashfield need.”

However, the MP promised to continue to prioritise her constituents in her Ashfield constituency, which includes Eastwood, despite her new appointment.

“It’s my role as the local MP that’s most important to me,” she said. “My first duty is and always will be to the voters in my home town of Eastwood.”

Ms De Piero will work alongside fellow campaign deputies Jonathan Ashworth and Toby Perkins.

Labour’s chairman of General Election strategy, Douglas Alexander, said: “I’m delighted to appoint Gloria, Jonathan and Toby to key roles as Labour gears up to fight the next General Election.

“The talent and experience of these three will contribute to a busy summer of campaigning ahead.”
