The mining past of Eastwood and other parts of the Advertiser district will be remembered at the launch of a new book by Dr David Amos.

The book, entitled The Miners of Nottinghamshire: A History of the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Trade Unions, 1980-1985, will be officially launched at the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre on February 15 between 11am and 2pm.

Dr Amos worked at Annesley Colliery for 25 years. He graduated as a Doctor of Philosophy with a dissertation on the Nottinghamshire Miners and the Miners’ Strike.

The event will look into the mining history of the area in the 1980s and will focus on the effect the 1984-85 mining strike had on locals.

As well as a unique opportunity to ask Dr Amos about the book, there will be a mining heritage display on coal mining in Nottinghamshire, live mining-themed music and a short presentation by a historical coalmining entertainer.

Dr Amos said: “I am delighted to be able to launch my book in Eastwood, which has a long history associated with coalmining.

“It’s particularly relevant that the launch is taking place in a building which has a strong connection with the local mining community and its history.”
