Onlookers smashed snoozing drink driver's window with a hammer in Sutton

A “panicked” Richard Diggin woke up on Priestsic Road and drove off, having fallen asleep after the seven-pint binge, but was arrested at his partner’s address, at 5.30pm, on March 17.

A test revealed he had 96 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes. A small amount of cocaine was found on him.

Rebecca Williams, mitigating, said he had been drinking when he received a phone call from his distressed partner who wanted him to come home.

“He pulled over when he realised he wasn’t capable of driving,” she said. “He fell asleep and woke up when he heard the heard the window smash.

“They thought he had collapsed and needed medical assistance. He was slightly panicked and drove off.”

The court heard the tarmac-layer was also convicted of drink driving in 2011.

Diggin, 26, of Stonehills Way, admitted driving with excess alcohol and possession of the Class A drug, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Friday.

He was banned for 36 months. He was fined £850 and ordered to pay a government surcharge of £85 and £85 costs.
