Determined pupils at Awsworth Primary School decided to stage an outdoor production after their nativity play was cancelled because of building works.
When teachers cancelled the festive production back in September it was the first time it had been called off in more than 25 years.
But last minute with only four weeks to rehearse, the kids decided to pull together an outdoor play based on the Charles Dickens classic, David Copperfield.
Mr Baxter, a member of the Greasley Players drama group, co-directed the show with teacher Ms Watson and will be playing his part as narrator, and the adult David.
He said: “Putting on a show like this in such a short space of time has been very challenging but the young cast have been amazing and are really excited about being part of something special this time of year.
“Come rain or shine we are determined to make this a Christmas treat.”
Recently as part of the school’s English literature curriculum pupils have been studying the work of Charles Dickens, so pupils and teachers agreed it would be a fitting production.
A cast of more than 50 kids in years five and six were selected to take part with Taylor Deakin, James Clarke, Jess Babcock, Libbi Saxton, Tom Baxter Downes, Kimberley Crowe and Merlin Tivey all taking lead roles.
David Copperfield will be staged on the school grounds today, Friday December 14, at 2.20pm.
