Lexie Watson has pledged to complete 30 star jumps every day this month in order to raise money to buy Easter eggs for local children in need.

The determined youngster has so far raised more than £300 and aims to fill three trollies of eggs to donate to Morrisons Eastwood. These will then be distributed to good causes within the community.

Lexie’s mum Claire King, who works at Morrisons in Eastwood, said: “Lexie and her brother are so lucky that they get so many eggs from grandparents, great-grandparents and so many people at Easter – we always have a house full of eggs.

“And we were talking about how there are some children that don’t get any. Then we came up with the idea of raising money so we could donate lots of them.”

Claire put a post on Facebook asking for donations from friends and family and was overwhelmed by the response.

She said: “Everyone has been so generous. We thought we might get like £30 but right now we’re on more than £300. It’s crazy.”

Lexie has already donated one big trolley full of chocolate goodies and is planning on donating two more loads before Easter.

Claire said: “We’ve also been making sure we buy some dairy-free eggs, so all kids are included. I’m so proud of her. And she’s so proud of herself too. She feels really good that she’s helping and also getting recognition for herself as well. It’s lovely.”

Lexie’s auntie Mandie Saunders added: “She wanted to raise money for children who wouldn’t be as fortunate as her and her brother. She has such a big heart for a little girl.”

The youngster has been working with Becky Stanbridge, community champion for Morrisons Eastwood, to decide where to donate the eggs. One load is going to the children’s ward at the Queen’s Medical Centre and the rest are provisionally set for food banks or similar organisations around Eastwood.

Becky said: “It’s such a kind thing for a little girl to want to do, to make sure everyone’s got an Easter egg at Easter.”
