Eastwood woman hosts fun day in honour of friends with breast cancer
Town resident Nicole Brown is planning a special event to raise awareness of breast cancer after two of her closest friends were diagnosed with the disease.
Nicole was devastated after hearing that two of her friends had breast cancer and is on a mission to raise money and awareness to help them and many more women.
The 30-year-old is organising a family fun day event at the Horse and Groom in Moorgreen, which will be held in August.
All the money raised will go to research and care charity Breast Cancer Now.
Nicole said: “I am organising this event in honour of two beautiful friends of mine, Kirsty and Debs, that live in the area and have recently been diagnosed and fighting the 'c' word.
"It’s really heart-breaking. I can’t believe two of my closest friends have both got it at the same time – it’s madness.”
The event will be on Sunday, August 29, from 11am and will feature a tombola, raffle, various stalls, leg waxing, musical entertainment and cider tent.
Nicole has already been left overwhelmed by the community’s response.
She said: “I can’t tell you how amazed I am at people’s reaction to it.
"I’ve had people dropping prizes off at my door for the tombola. We’ve even had a brand new bike as a donation and various beauty treatments.
“The way the community gets together is incredible. The level of kindness is amazing.”
Nicole is now urging as many people as possible to check their breasts for signs of cancer and hopes to raise more awareness in the local area.
She said: "The main goal is to get people to check their breasts. And not just women, men can get it as well.
"It should be a normal thing just to check them regularly and not just assume they are fine.
"Kirsty is only 40 so it can happen to anyone at any age.
“If my friends hadn’t caught theirs soon enough, they could be in a completely different situation so I can’t stress how important it is. It takes a matter of seconds to potentially save your life.”
Nicole, along with Debs’ and Kirsty’s family and friends, are busy planning the fun day and are looking to gather raffle and tombola prizes, as well as donations, ahead of the event.
