Residents react as Lidl wants to set up shop in Kimberley
A popular supermarket giant is ‘particularly interested’ in building a new store in Kimberley.
In a list on its website, Lidl has set out its ‘store requirements’ as part of plans to expand its offering across the UK.
The German retailer is hoping to set up shop in Kimberley and also has its eye on other areas of Nottinghamshire.
The website reads: “To continue our phenomenal growth, we require further sites.
“These pages highlight locations that particularly interest us.”
The list includes ten sites it hopes to move into across Nottinghamshire, including Kimberley, West Bridgford, Strelley, Mapperley, Edwalton, Basford and Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
A store is also planned for Ilkeston.
If Lidl finds a suitable site in Kimberley, the budget retailer could join the likes of Sainsbury’s and Heron Foods as a major supermarket for the town.
News of the potential new store has been met with excitement from local residents.
Jim Thorpe, 57, told the Advertiser: “I think another supermarket would be a good idea. Sainsbury’s is expensive sometimes and we sometimes have to drive quite far if they’ve run out of something. The only problem is where would they put it?”
Other residents shared their views on social media.
Shirley Smith commented: “Yes, Sainsbury’s needs some competition.”
Margaret Buckthorn posted: “Would love this.”
Trevor Jones added: “About time.”
Emma Sheffield said: “Yes, where though?”
Residents speculated on location ideas for the proposed store, with concerns the town may be too small to take on another supermarket giant.
Shirley Smith commented: “I just can’t picture anywhere suitable.”
Lidl is looking for ‘prominent sites in town, district, edge of centre or out of town locations’, ideally with ‘main road frontage with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow’, sized between 14,000 and 26,500 square feet.
It is seeking freehold, leasehold or long leasehold opportunities.
