Kimberley Town Council stopped the pram race because it could not afford a security company to watch over the event.
Police officers who used to do the job had to pull out due to ‘national changes in police regulation’, Cllr Mary McGuckin said.
“We were struggling to pay for a private security company. And in recent years we were already paying more for the running of the event than what was raised for charity,” said the councillor.
The town council announced earlier this year it was going to scale down the pram race to a morning parade from the Stag Inn to Hall Om Wong Park. Taking place on September 8, it will be followed by fair rides and games.
