Reader letter: Have your cats neutered as soon as possible

May I urge your cat-owning readers, if they haven’t already done so, to have their cats neutered as soon as possible.

We are now coming into what is known as the ‘kitten season’ and we cannot stress strongly enough how important it is for pet owners to book their cats into the vets for this relatively simple operation.

Not only can unspayed females become pregnant, they are also at risk from the many fatal viruses that can be spread by mating, including FIV, FelV and pyometra (infection of the womb) later in

The same goes for males but there is also the added risk of entire toms wandering and getting lost.

Most cats killed by cars are unneutered males.

Cats Protection recommends that cats be neutered from four months onwards.

If you are on a low income, ie on state benefit or on a low income, the branch is offering vouchers for £10 for each male and £10 for each female, with the rest of the cost being met by the Derby branch.

All cat owners have to do is contact their chosen vet to book their cat in for the op but they will have to show them proof of benefits.
