He may be nearly 70 but that didn’t stop Roy Oldershaw from Stapleford taking part in Broxtowe Borough Council’s Bramcote 5K.
Roy joined 250 other runners and walkers last month to take part in the 5K challenge, which is organized by the Council’s Sport Development Team, Broxtowe Sport.
He was celebrating how far he had come since a fall in 2010 where he broke his hip in four places and was unable to move around easily for six months.
He proudly completed the race at Bramcote Hills Park in 1 hour and 37 minutes and already has his sights set on other Broxtowe Sport events including the first Chilwell Santa Dash in November.
Roy said: “I did the 2K event last year and I enjoyed it.
“I thought now I’d like to do the 5K. I know it took me over an hour and a half to do but I completed the course. I want to build on it and do a 7K or get quicker doing 5K.”
Roy got back into exercise after his fall when he was referred to the Council’s Exercise Referral Scheme where he started exercising to strengthen his muscles and increase his fitness.
Anyone who is inspired by Roy’s story can say #icancanyou? and get involved in a host of fitness challenges taking place in Broxtowe over the coming months including:
Kimberley Beginners Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon and Junior Triathlon, Sunday 7th June at Kimberley Leisure Centre; Beauvale Glow Walk, Friday 17th July at Beauvale Priory; Moorgreen Beginners Duathlon, Challenge Duathlon and Junior Taster , Sunday 11th October, Colliers Wood; Chilwell Santa Dash, Sunday 29th November, Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre.
