children learned how to blow the whistle on their friends with a refereeing course at Aldercar Language School.
The course was part of a day-long multi-sports event, held last Wednesday, for children aged between 14 and 18 and was led by Graham Belcher from Derbyshire FA.
Coach Lee Albrighton said: “It gives them the authority to ref in school games – to step in if the real ref doesn’t turn up. It teaches them the basic rules, like offside and throw-ins. Everybody passed and they all got on really well.”
The pupils watched situations on a DVD and were then asked to make red or yellow card decisions. There were also games of football, tennis and basketball.
