As the centenary of the Great War approaches, special preparations are beginning for the annual DH Lawrence Festival later this year.

As part of the festival this September there will be an exhibition called ‘Lawrence’s War’, and staff at the famous DH Lawrence Heritage Centre in Mansfield Road are appealing to members of the public to donate memorabilia to feature in it.

The Lawrence Festival Exhibition will include memories of Eastwood – from the people who stayed in the town and from those who fought away from home during World War One.

Staff at the heritage centre are asking if anyone has any memorabilia, photographs, medals, belongings, letters, postcards or objects associated with the war period in Eastwood and the surrounding villages which they would be willing to lend to the museum to exhibit for the duration of the festival from early September to mid November.

The centre can also take copies of photos and documents if people do not want to part with them.

Heritage centre assistant Jackie Greaves said: “In addition we are interested to hear if anyone has any stories of local people during the war whether they were a hero or a heroine, at home or away.

“Of particular interest are stories of what everyday life was like in Eastwood during wartime.”

If you think you may have anything of interest, contact Jackie on 01773 717353 or at culture@broxtowe.gov.uk.

The exhibition is just one of many events and activities taking place as part of the 11th annual festival.

DH Lawrence Heritage is a multi-award winning visitor attraction which brings together a museum, heritage centre, gift shop, art gallery, meeting room facility, civil wedding venue and bistro.

The centre and birthplace museum are open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am until 4pm.

Admission to the museum is by timed entry throughout the day from 11am.

Spaces are limited so please call to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
