Tax has made me worse off

Cllr Jason Zadrozny tries to tell us that he is on the side of hard working families and pensioners.

Here, in Nottinghamshire, the county council are imposing swinging cuts in the provision of services and vastly increased charges for services to pensioners. Meals on wheels and day care centres being two of the hardest hit.

If Cllr Zadrozny really cares about the people of Ashfield and Eastwood, why doesn’t he attend the budget debate at County Hall? This year is not the first one he has missed.

The Labour group at County Hall tried to get the Conservatives to accept a ‘Living Wage’ of £7.20 per hour as opposed to the national minimum wage of £6.08 for workers over 21.

The Conservatives threw this motion out. The Lib Dems refused to support the motion.

At the same time, the Conservatives awarded a Corporate Director a pay rise of £25,000 which took her salary to over £120,000 per annum – an increase of more than 25 per cent.

How can they justify this when there is still an embargo on pay rises for the majority, most council workers haven’t had a pay rise for three years and figures for redundancies at County Hall are still rising.

I fully understand the Con/Dem system of taxation.

The government may have taken a few people out of paying tax, but they are clawing much more back in increased taxation elsewhere.

Petrol prices for instance, are at an all time high, yet there is another tax increase on the way. Increased fuel charges lead to increases elsewhere, one has only to visit the supermarkets to see the knock on effect.

Then we have the granny tax, an insidious method of taking more back from the pensioners.

I was given a 5.6 per cent increase in my pension this year. Because of my tax situation I am actually over £3 worse off!
