Teacher’s bus appeal for mobile youth club

A TEACHER is on the hunt for a double decker bus to use as a mobile youth club in Ilkeston.

Tracy Bailey wants to find a bus to kit out with games consoles, TVs and other gadgets, and travel around the area giving young people a safe and fun place to go.

The teacher from Jubilee House in Stapleford, said: “We’re always hearing about young people having nowhere to go and nothing to do so that’s why I want to do this.

“I have a team of people willing to volunteer to run the service and we’re all trained and CRB checked, all we need now is a bus.”

The team put together by Tracy were until recently in charge of a youth club based at the Arena but they have stopped the sessions based at the Rutland Street church to focus on the new project.

Tracy added: “If we can get something up and running I know it will be successful.

“Basing the new youth club on a bus will mean that it’s accessible to young people all over Ilkeston and the surrounding areas.

“We want to appeal to children and youngsters of all ages and the bus will allow us to do that.”

The idea is that the double decker will stop off in different areas, including Abbotsford, Cotmanhay, West Hallam, Kirk Hallam and Shipley View, allowing as many young people as possible the chance to hop on.

As well as somewhere for youngsters to use as a meeting place for socialising, staff on the bus hope to use the mobile club as a way to offer advice and support to those who come aboard.

The appeal for the bus is particularly timely as the future of one of Ilkeston’s most popular youth clubs, based at the Cantelupe Centre, hangs in the balance after a Derbyshire County Council consultation over the future of youth services was launched.
