Team reunites 50 years later

Members of a Langley Mill cricket team reunited 50 years after winning the Co-operative challenge cup.

The Langley Mill and Aldercar Co-operative Cricket team got together on September 1 – exactly 50 years to the day that they took home the trophy.

They met at Brian Fretwell’s home in Dawson Close, Eastwood.

Stanley Rowley, who used to live in Greenhills Road, came all the way from the Isle of Wight.

Brian said the group talked about old times.

“We shared and compared many happy memories of old Eastwood, friends and sporting chums long gone”, said Brian.

“We spoke about Billy Hopkins who was a poet and mentor to DH Lawrence and how he used to write his ‘rambling notes’ for the Advertiser, and reminisced about the monkey run, where teenage boys and girls would strut up and down the street preening themselves to attract the opposite sex,” he said.

Eastwood town councillor Brian griffin also attended the reunion.
