A woman at Kimberley Leisure centre has been named as the number one female lifeguard in the UK following a nationwide competition.
Lizzie Shaw beat off stiff competition from almost 1,000 entrants in the Royal Life Saving Society’s (RLSS) annual contest.
In addition to Lizzie’s individual success, Kimberley Leisure Centre came third out of 53 centres for having the best lifeguards in the UK.
Lizzie said: “I’m very happy with the result and all our hard work has paid off.
“I’m proud to be part of such a great team at Kimberley Leisure Centre and the fact that the facility itself has also been rewarded is amazing.
“We’re looking forward to trying to better these results next year!”
The competition saw lifeguards taking part in a triathlon – three different elements of lifeguarding.
There was a timed swim, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and a theory test.
This year’s competition saw 53 leisure centres go head to head for the title of 2015 Lifeguard Triathlon champion.
A total of 950 lifeguards took part in the event, making it one of the most successful Lifeguard Triathlon events to date.
Kimberley Leisure Centre’s trainer-assessor, Stephane Chambrelan said: “We at Kimberley had six females and one male in the UK’s top 20 Lifeguards this year, finishing higher than previous years and making this year a tremendous show of effort and one to cherish.
“There was true dedication shown by all of our lifeguards.”
The competition is administered by the Institute of Qualified Lifeguards is known as the IQL & CIMSPA Lifeguard.
The centre is organising a training course to become a lifeguard in December. For further details contact 0115 917 3366 or email email@example.com
