It was a case of lights, camera, action for an inspirational Nuthall parish councillor and a retired Asssociate Priest , who have been forthright in a close-up interview and filming session for a new initiative.

Cllr Stephen Green,of Cedarland Crescent, who was the first person in Britain with Down’s Syndrome to be elected onto a Parish Council, and Peter Jones, who lives in Roland Avenue, and served at Nuthall St Patrick’s and Kimberley’s Holy Trinity churches, are due to appear on BBC OUCH — an investigative disability website.

BBC employees Kate Monaghan, a video broadcast journalist, and colleague Holly Cocker, a camera operator, joined Stephen and Peter at the former’s home and carried out informal question and answer sessions between the pair.

Peter discussed with Stephen his role with Nuthall parish Council and in conversation asked searching questions as to how Stephen’s disability impacted on fellow council members.

Stephen gave clear and positive responses to the questions posed and made a valid point that “councillors needed to be more patient and understanding” at the meetings.

Peter paid tribute to Stephen for his achievements against the odds. “Stephen has been an inspiration to many and in the face of adversity and despite his disability he has tried harder than most to lead a normal life backed by his very supportive family,” he said

Speaking on behalf of BBC OUCH, Kate said: “Our programme focusses on people of all ages with varying disabilities and how, given appropriate support, they have made progress beyond the norm, inspiring others at the same time.”

“ There is a great deal of interest in how people with disabilities cope with their respective conditions.

“The BBC OUCH website aims to inspire and raise awareness while at the same time focusing on people and sharing their stories in a bid to show that even against the odds the impossible can be achieved.”
